A 'sleeping beauty' cosmetics brand born in 1877 and awaken in 2017.
Cosmydor is a French artisanal cosmetics brand. Cosmydor create organic cosmetics, their ingredients natural state is altered as little as possible, making them extremely effective thanks to a maximum concentration of active natural components.
When founded in 1877, Cosmydor specialised in the manufacture of premium soaps and eaux de toilette. It was hugely successful for almost a century thanks to the quality of its products, the originality of its fragrances and packaging, and the beauty of the illustrations – including the iconic woman painted in 1891 by Jules Chéret, a famous artist of the time. The brand won prizes at the Universal Exhibitions in Paris in 1889 and 1900 before disappearing in the late 1960s due to a succession crisis.
In 2015, a French entrepreneur, Xavier Quattrocchi-Oubradous, fascinated by heritage brands and a naturopathy-lover rediscovered and relaunched Cosmydor. Xavier decided to bring it back to life through exceptionally high quality cosmetics in line with the public’s new expectations for naturalness and authenticity.
Xavier and his team wrote an extremely demanding list of specifications and spent a year researching the best way to manufacture their products in a 100% artisanal manner and using 100% active natural components in France to meet the strictest “organic” requirements, while minimising environmental impact.
Cosmydor use as few ingredients as possible, and more active components. Vegetable oils and essential oils known for their moisturising, soothing, antioxidant, antiseptic and regenerating powers form the basis of their formulas, only including active natural components. Cosmydor do not dilute to lower costs and they remove anything unnecessary.
Cosmydor's simple and gentle manufacturing processes best preserve the fragile compounds, i.e. they only use cold pressed virgin oils instead of refined oils obtained using solvents (which are cheaper). Their processes are artisanal because they require ongoing human intervention and surveillance; a skill comparable to that of a carpenter or a seamstress. Cosmydor respect nature as much as possible at every stage of the manufacturing process, the irregularity of solid soaps, the organic deposits sometimes seen in liquid soaps as well as the oils in some of their creams, are signs their products are fresh and their expertise is artisanal.
Virtuous cosmetics are cosmetics which respect your skin just as much as the environment. They focus on five requirements:
NATURAL & HARMLESS
A demanding organic certification guarantees the origins of Cosmydor ingredients, using only active natural components, with no harmful products whatsoever, as well as natural textures and fragrances solely from the active natural components used. Cosmydor agricultural raw materials come from organic farming, favouring harvested products. Products are certified organic.
Concise but complete ranges free from artificial components, undiluted formulas without any useless ingredients, guaranteeing an ultra-concentration of active natural components in all their products. One very simple example of eco-responsibility is the use of powdered almond kernels, coffee beans or wheat germ in their exfoliating products (creams and soaps). Why use plastic micro-beads, which end up in our oceans causing enormous damage to flora and fauna, when simple and natural alternatives exist.
QUALITY & RESPECT FOR RAW MATERIALS
Oils and essential oils produced from organically and sustainably farmed plants, fully manual production processes and methods as well as cold-process soap-making and cold pressing as a requirement. Cold-processing respects thousand-year-old artisanal methods.
RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT & MADE IN FRANCE HERITAGE
A strict “no-packaging” policy: no plastic containers, instead Cosmydor use glass, opaline glass and aluminium; no disposable cardboard packaging. Products are only wrapped in tissue paper which is 100% biodegradable and made using artisanal processes in France. For products’ transportation and presentation, they have chosen organic cotton bags or reusable boxes.
Priority is given to local production in order to minimise transport and reduce their carbon footprint.
Products are 100% biodegradable.
